Autumn Courses at the Tree Health Centre

We’re pleased to announce a new season of training at the Yorkshire Arboretum’s Tree Health Centre.

The courses delivered from this unique teaching environment are a highly engaging and immersive learning experience. Led by specialists in their field, they cater to all levels of expertise and are suitable for anyone with a professional or personal interest in trees.

Autumn Schedule

Introduction to Tree Health Problems
Tues 18 Oct, 9.30am – 12.30pm

Tree pests and diseases have never been so great a problem as they are now, but the issues are often poorly understood. Join Dr Charles Lane, Consultant plant pathologist from Fera Science Ltd to find out where to start.

Collecting & Sowing Tree Seed
Thurs 20 Oct, 10am - 3pm

In this day course, John Grimshaw will show you how to select, harvest, clean and sow a range of seeds you’ll collect from trees at the Yorkshire Arboretum.

Principles of Pruning
Thurs 3 Nov, 10am - 3pm

This workshop will provide an introduction to pruning, from when you can safely hack to where more cautious work is needed, giving you the confidence to start managing your woody plants for best results.

Tree Pest and Disease Course
Wed 9 Nov, 9.30am – 4.30pm

Learn about tree pests and how to identify future concerns using the UK Plant Health Risk Register. Join plant pathologist Dr Charles Lane in the arboretum to categorise tree disease and assess the risk of pests.

Introduction to Tree Identification: Conifers
Thu 10 Nov, 10am – 3pm

Join Yorkshire Arboretum Director John Grimshaw to learn about the main groups of conifers found in British gardens and landscapes, and enable you to be able to identify the major groups using a few easily observed characters.

Best Start to Rural Planting
Thurs 17 Nov, 10am – 1pm

Planting a tree in your garden or neighbourhood can help a lot, but choosing the right tree, planting and looking after it can be a daunting prospect. Join John Grimshaw to learn how.

Tree & Plant Biosecurity for Professionals
Wed 23 Nov, 9.30am - 4.30pm

This day course will deepen your applied knowledge of pest movement pathways particularly related to trees, biosecurity measures, and summarise important tree health policy and legislation. Led by Dr Charles Lane and delivered through the Tree Health Centre at The Yorkshire Arboretum.
