THE ACCESSIBLE ARBORETUM – AN APPEAL

We are seeking funding to help us deliver our Accessible Arboretum Project – making this beautiful place and its work available to more people through the provision of new Tramper scooters and an all-terrain wheelchair; enhanced wifi will enable our education work to be more widely accessed, and CCTV in the Red Squirrel enclosure will bring their activities to people in their own homes.

We have been fortunate to secure grant funding of £34,900 for this exciting project from the Howardian Hills National Landscape, but to make it happen we need to find match-funding of 20%.

Please help us to reach our target of £8,600 by donating today.

With its wonderful blend of woodland, wild meadows and wide green fairways the arboretum has a natural feel. For me a truly inspiring place. J. Whitmore, visitor July 2024.

Red Squirrels at the Yorkshire Arboretum

In spring 2023 we introduced a small breeding group of native Red Squirrels Sciurus vulgaris, to our purpose built enclosure, allowing us to maintain a captive population for future reintroductions, and enabling us to tell the story of a native mammal lost from most of our woodland. Breeding in 2023 was extremely successful, exceeding everyone’s expectations with the birth of 14 new kits. At the end of last year we began rehoming the kits to sites across the country, reducing our enclosure population to a more comfortable amount.

The Red Squirrel Enclosure is open every day. Although Red Squirrels may be seen throughout the day, they tend to be most active in the morning and afternoon. There is no extra charge to visit the enclosure.

For the latest information on the squirrels you can visit our squirrel page or if you want to find out more join a free talk on Tuesday & Saturday mornings at 10.30am.
