Photography Workshop

A half-day workshop taking photographs and receiving advice and support from a qualified teacher from Ryedale Garden Photography who has many years experience.

The workshop is for a small number of people and is ideal for beginner photographers or for those who are new to digital photography. You will cover a range of topics such as composition, exposure, focus, camera settings, aperture and shutter speed. This is a great way to explore the arboretum, spending the morning with like-minded people and picking up advice on how to take better photographs.

Ryedale Book Festival at the Yorkshire Arboretum

We welcome Ryedale Book Festival to the arboretum for a day of fantastic activities for bibliophiles and tree lovers. Join best-selling authors Fiona Stafford (The Long Long Life of Trees) and Karin Celestine (Honey for Tea), international storyteller Cat Weatherill, artist Alice Fox,  and poet Daniela Nunnari sharing their tributes to trees. Younger visitors can enjoy performances of stick stories, old and new, and a range of stick inspired activities (including knitting!) on this fun day out for all the family.

Midsummer Poetry Reading

Join award winning poets Liz Berry and Mark Pajak for poetry reading in beautiful surroundings.

Liz Berry was born in the Black Country and now lives in Birmingham. Her debut collection, Black Country (Chatto & Windus, 2014), was a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, received a Somerset Maugham Award, won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Award and won the Forward Prize for Best First Collection 2014. Black Country was chosen as a book of the year by The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Mail, The Big Issue and The Morning Star. Liz’s poems have been broadcast on BBC Radio, television and recorded for the Poetry Archive.   www.lizberrypoetry.co.uk.

Mark Pajak was born in Merseyside. His work has been published in MagmaThe North and The Rialto (among others), been highly commended in the Cheltenham Poetry Competition and National Poetry Competition and won first place in the 2016 Bridport Prize. He has received a Northern Writer’s Award from New Writing North and was 2016’s Apprentice Poet in Residence at Ilkley Literature Festival. His first pamphlet, Spitting Distance, was selected as a Laureate’s Choice and is published with smith|doorstop.

£10 per person (includes a free glass of wine or a soft drink and nibbles) 

Doors open at 6pm to allow time for a stroll in the arboretum before the reading begins.
